Platelet Rich Plasma for Joint/Muscle Pain

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) which contain growth factors and sometimes added stem cells is being used more frequently for tendon irritations, tendinitis, and bursitis around the shoulder, knee, elbow, and ankle joints. PRP is an all-natural form of therapy that helps speed healing of chronic injuries by harnessing your body’s innate regenerative capacity.
Made famous by pro golfer Tiger Woods, and Basketball player Kobe Bryant, PRP is rapidly becoming a popular choice for elite athletes seeking treatment for osteoarthritis, tendonitis and other muscle and tendon injuries.
The procedure takes a small amount of a patient’s blood, isolates the platelets and injects the growth factors they release directly into the injured area, where they promote the body’s natural healing response. An average of 3 injections spaced 4 weeks apart is usually required to see best results.
PRP has the benefit of stimulating the release of stem cells from vessel walls further augmenting repair. Stem cells are also being directly added to our cartilage regeneration efforts.
Tendinitis is an inflammation, degeneration or injury to the tendon, the structure in your body that connects muscle to bone. Tendinitis can lead to degeneration of the collagen fibers that make up the tendon. The chronic pain that develops with tendinitis has been successfully treated with soft tissue massage, stretching, icing, and careful exercises.
In the past, when tissues and joints were injured, the common treatment in similar circumstances was a cortisone injection. Cortisone is a steroid that inhibits protein metabolism so inflamed cells that are actively turning over are shut down. This effect reduces swelling and therefore pain.
Unfortunately, it also reduces activity in normal cells and tissues, and leads to weakening of the tissues and occasional tendon ruptures. Joints that are repeatedly injected with cortisone show damage to the articular cartilage surfaces, which protect the ends of bones. Rather than work to actively heal the damaged tissue, a cortisone injection unfortunately only serves to mask the injury, allowing the athlete to continue to play, often causing more damage.
Current treatment of soft tissue injuries in top level athletes and weekend warriors may combine:
- Careful diagnosis to define the specific injury.
- Ice to relieve pain.
- Injections with growth factors +/- stem cells to promote healing
Is PRP right for me?
- A PRP treatment could be right for you if you’re experiencing:
- Mild to moderate osteoarthritis (in most joints, but especially the knees, hips or shoulders)
- Lateral and medial epicondylitis (tennis and golfer’s elbow)
- Rotator cuff tendonitis or partial tears
- One of many other common tendon, muscle and ligament issues
Despite its growing popularity, not all PRP therapy is created equally. Studies have indicated that higher concentrations of PRP stimulate more efficient healing – and only a qualified specialist, using state-of-the-art medical equipment, can ensure this.
Platelet Rich Plasma for Sexual Health
PRP can also be used for Erectile Dysfunction (ED).
Erectile dysfunction (impotence) is inability to get an erection or problem keeping an erection firm enough for sex and/or a reduced sexual desire that, when on an ongoing basis, it usually affects your self-confidence and causes stress, and relationship problems, frequently creating an issue for you or your partner.
Erectile dysfunction is significantly common in men who have diabetes and is most often caused by poor long-term blood sugar control, which damages nerves and blood vessels. Erectile dysfunction can be linked to other conditions common in men with diabetes, such as high blood pressure and coronary artery disease. ED is three times more common in patients with diabetes mellitus. ED in diabetes is associated with vascular and neural factors. Hyperglycemia (increased glucose in blood) is believed to give rise to these microvascular changes. ED in diabetes is strongly correlated with glucose control, duration of disease and diabetic complications. The incidence increases with increasing age, duration of diabetes and deteriorating metabolic control, and is higher in individuals with type 2 diabetes than those with type 1. ED in men with diabetes often affects their quality of life and, as patients are often reluctant to come forward with their symptoms losing a great opportunity to correct their ED.
Specific causes other than diabetes are:
- >Metabolic syndrome (a condition involving increased blood pressure, high insulin levels, body fat around the waist and high cholesterol
- Obesity, inflammation,
- Low testosterone
- Tobacco; Alcoholism and other drug abuse
- Heart disease, High blood pressure, neurological disease
- Peyronie’s disease (development of scar tissue inside the penis)
- Parkinson’s disease, Multiple sclerosis disease
- Surgeries or injuries that affect the pelvic area or spinal cord
- Medications such as antidepressants, antihistamines and medications to treat high blood pressure, pain or prostate cancer.
- Emotional or psychological causes can interfere with sexual feelings and cause or worsen erectile dysfunction.
- Depression, anxiety or other mental health conditions
- Problems due to money, stress, fatigue, relationships, work, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia
Platelet rich plasma (PRP) from your own blood can be used to repair the problem rather than putting a band aid on the problem with drugs like Viagra, Cialis.
